Air Source Heat Pump Installers in the UK
The right installer makes all the difference. A properly designed air source heat pump system runs quieter, costs less to run, keeps your warranty intact, and unlocks the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which only an MCS-certified installer can claim for you. We help you find local installers across 2,641 UK towns.
What Makes a Good Air Source Heat Pump Installer
An air source heat pump is a whole-home heating system, not a boiler swap-in. Getting the design right (heat loss, radiator sizing, cylinder, controls) matters as much as the hardware, and in the UK two certifications carry real legal and financial weight.
MCS Certification (Required for the Grant)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme requires an MCS-certified installer: that is a factual scheme rule, not a marketing claim. The installer applies for the £7,500 grant on your behalf (£9,000 for oil and LPG heated homes from 21 July 2026) and the discount comes straight off your quote. MCS installation also includes a room-by-room heat-loss survey, which is what sizes the unit and radiators correctly. If an installer is not MCS-certified, the grant simply cannot be claimed. Scotland's Home Energy Scotland funding likewise expects appropriately certified installation; check the scheme conditions when you apply.
Gas Safe for the Boiler Removal
Most UK installations replace a gas boiler, and any gas work, disconnecting and removing the boiler and capping the supply, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That is a legal requirement. Larger heat pump firms have Gas Safe engineers in-house; smaller ones subcontract it. Either is fine; just ask who is doing the gas work and confirm they are registered.
Heat Pump Design Experience
An installer who designs five heat pump systems a week is very different from a boiler firm doing its first. Experienced installers take the heat-loss survey seriously, design for low flow temperatures (where heat pumps earn their efficiency), know which radiators genuinely need upsizing, and site the outdoor unit sensibly for noise and airflow. Ask how many systems they have installed in the last 12 months and what SCOP their installs typically achieve.
Clear, Complete Written Quotes
A good quote shows the price before the grant, the grant deduction, and your out-of-pocket figure, and covers the unit, hot water cylinder (a real line item if you are replacing a combi boiler), any radiator upgrades, all plumbing and electrical work, removal and disposal of the old boiler, and commissioning. 0% VAT (until 31 March 2027) should already be reflected. Anything vague now becomes a surprise later.
Workmanship Warranty
The manufacturer warranty covers the unit; the installation itself, pipework, mounting, drainage, electrics, should be covered by a separate workmanship warranty from the installer. Look for a minimum of 12 months, in writing. MCS installations also come with prescribed consumer protection arrangements; keep your MCS certificate and paperwork.
Consumer Protections
Installation services in the UK are covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which requires work to be carried out with reasonable care and skill and goods to be of satisfactory quality. Keep your quote, invoice, MCS certificate and commissioning records; they are your evidence if something needs putting right.
