EV Charging Cost Calculator
Find out how much it costs to run an EV charged at home in the UK compared to filling up with petrol. There are no per-mile road charges here: EVs pay standard-rate Vehicle Excise Duty (about £195 a year since April 2025) and petrol cars pay similar VED plus fuel duty at the pump, so the energy maths below is the fair comparison.

How we calculate
- EV cost per mile = efficiency (kWh per distance) x electricity price. No per-mile road charges exist in the UK; VED (~£195/yr for EVs since April 2025) is an annual charge that petrol cars broadly match, so it is excluded both ways
- Electricity: ~25p/kWh Ofgem price cap average (changes quarterly). EV tariffs with cheap overnight windows lower it; rates vary by supplier, so compare tariffs
- Petrol: £1.45/L, 8.3L/100km (about 34mpg). The petrol price is an editorial estimate (June 2026); pump prices vary, so check current local prices
- Diesel: editorial estimate of £1.50/L; diesel cars pay fuel duty at the pump like petrol cars
- EV efficiency: vehicle-specific consumption from manufacturer data
- Solar: reduces the electricity component of your charging toward zero
- Charger payback: based on £1,000 typical installed cost (UK installs usually run £800-1,200 fitted)
